Transcode has already the ac3-passthru function which let you
keep the original soundtrack from the DVD in ac3 format.
The only problem is to identify the ac3 bitrate which is often
384/448kbit and then calculate the one or two CD rip bitrate (probably
two in our case with AC3).
I don't think the code from transcode is able to identify the
ac3bitrate yet, once this is done, it's probably just a new
feature that could be added to dvd::rip.
Meanwhile, if you know the AC3 bitrate, you can maybe force
the transcode command line option in dvd::rip and see if
it'll work right.
The important flag is -A and -N 0x2000

In terms of playback, both xine and mplayer supports AC3 decoding embedded in
AVI (divx3/divx4) files.
