XviD is an MPEG-4 compliant codec - MPEG-4 covers a range of options
though, many of which are not supported by hardware players.  I'd
recommend disabling B-Frames and qpel for starters (using xvid4conf) -
searching the XviD and transcode mailing lists will probably give you
more info on which features are supported by most players.

AVI files can have multiple audio tracks - I've never tried doing this
with dvd::rip though.  Which codec (xvid/divx/etc) is used is irrelevant
in this respect.
