[dvd::rip] AVI encoding problem

Many of us over at the Ubuntu forum have been having the same problem
and are coming up short of a solution:

when using the .deb version of dvdrip we get various errors using any
codec under the avi format

divx4/5 - module failed to initialize/seg fault
This I found may be due to a bug listed in an archived post here

Xvid* also fails with a problem locating the encoder.c - module failed
to initialize

I have installed mjpegtools (I forget exact name of package)

Transcode is working, because I can rip a dvd into Mpeg format (*vcd)

but for somereason many of us can't convert to or from avi using
dvdrip, we are running
ubuntu 5.10 which uses kernel 2.6.12

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful, thank you kindly in advance
