I owe Jörn a serious apology. Some of the statements I made
in my "Quality Issues" post were way out of line. I guess my
main intention was to direct some attention at some of the problems
inexperienced Linux users face when trying to install and use
dvd::rip. Yes, I did go overboard, and I do regret
that. The fact that a poll was run about this shows me that the
developer really does care, which is a great thing.
dvd::rip is a shining star in the Linux community. That is why I am upset about this whole issue.
Here
is the deal. If one were to analyze what the general public
wants to accomplish on their pc, there are a few things that stand
out. Some examples include;
1.Surfing the Internet 2.Managing Finances 3.Listening to Music 4.Downloading Music and Movies 5.Watching Movies 6.Downloading Movies 7.Web Design 8.Copying Movies
My
whole point, in saying all this, and I must apologize for not being
specific and not backing up everything I say, but my whole point, the
reason I started all this, is because...
Jörn, your program,
what you have written so far, is a key to success for Linux to beat
Microsoft. Think about it. If I could do
everything I wanted to do in Windows or Linux, but in
Windows I could easily do something very important to me, like
re-encode movies, but I couldn't do it in Linux, then I would not
switch to Linux. It's that simple. I read the
preliminary results from your installation poll, but those responses
are not accurate because they are mainly from experienced Linux
users, inexperienced users either have a friend help them,
they give up, or they are not on your mailing list.
I guess what
I am trying to get across is this. You make this thing so
easy to install that all one has to do is run a chmod a+x command, and
then a ./dvd-rip-install.run command, and you have just accomplished
more than you could possibly imagine. Not only for yourself,
but for the entire linux community, even those who will never use your
program.
Don't say it's not possible, and don't say that
transcode and dvd::rip can't be integrated. They are both
open source and you can do whatever you want. Hell the
transcode developers could do it if they wanted to. Of
course ya'all could still keep separate versions as well.
I just
hope you understand the magnitude of this program that you have written
and I seriously hope that you have the foresight and ambition to take
it to the next level.
Sorry for all the trouble.
Benjamin
