Yep, I think this is normal. The lame manpage recommends quality 2,
since 0 and 1 are very slow but don't really increase quality in a
noticeable way.
I just set the default quality level to 2 (in CVS).

AFAIRC with VBR A/V sync get's rather difficult with an AVI container.
