Ok, I think you were hit by a known problem with newer Linux versions,
including Gentoo. Try the following:

  * Start dvd::rip and enter the Preferences dialog
  * Switch to "Miscellaneous options"
  * Set "Workaround transcode NPTL bugs" to "No"
  * Hit "Ok" and exit dvd::rip

Now remove the following directory in your home directory

  .dvdrip/tc_filter_list

and start dvd::rip. Hopefully now everything just works like expected ;)

Regards,

Joern
