Ok, I think you were hit by a known problem with newer Linux versions,
including Gentoo. Try the following:
* Start dvd::rip and enter the Preferences dialog
* Switch to "Miscellaneous options"
* Set "Workaround transcode NPTL bugs" to "No"
* Hit "Ok" and exit dvd::rip
Now remove the following directory in your home directory
.dvdrip/tc_filter_list
and start dvd::rip. Hopefully now everything just works like expected ;)
