I got the desired results using ffmpeg mpeg4:  BPP=0.4 and filesize about 1.1GB.  Nice quality (not far off dvd based on appearances), and no complex configuration settings to stuff up with that codec.

But I'm still wondering if there's something wrong with my xvid codec

Further thoughts:

1. Mmm .. according to these Gentoo people:

I'm not using the best xvid4 configuration - I just left those at the defaults.  They recommend eg Quant Type = mpeg and VHQ = Wide Search for dvd ripping, and they are aiming at about the size and quality I am.
But do these settings make any difference to the final file size?

2.  Should I be using ffmpeg mpeg2 or something?
