I don't know. This NPTL-Workaround thingy became a FAQ, I suggested 
disabling it very often. So I think it's better to disable it by 
default. Probably I could implement a more sophisticated default setting
(e.g. enable it on amd64), but spending so much effort on workarounding
is somewhat nonproductive, isn't it? ;)

The transcode guys (in particular Francesco) are working hard on the new
version with much effort on the internals and I hope these things will 
get fixed along with it.
