I have tried 3 dvds now and get the same error (although they all die at different points). The dvds are all in excellent condition.

Since nobody else seems to be replying, I'll just say that I've had the same problem with a number of DVDs (but not all) on different drives. I ended up not using DVDRip itself, but ripped the DVD with mplayer. Check out the thread "Using mplayer -dumpstream instead of tccat?" in the list archives for details.
