OK OK - I'm an idiot!
In the RIP TITLE screen i had several files which stated a 29.97 fps.
I hit the "view selected title" button - and frame rate changed to
23.976. ripped to hard disk - no errors. and transcoding looks good
(i'll be able to tell in 90 minutes!)
