If you have access to a Windows machine then I think you'll find DVD
Shrink very satisfactory for backing up full DVDs to single layer
writeables. It's like a free version of DVD X Copy:

Hi,
it took more than a year of hard work, but finally we have a new
dvd::rip stable release again.
Congratulations and thanks (though I no longer use dvd::rip personally
since if I wanted to make a DVD backup copy I'd burn it onto a DVD-R and
thus prefer a 9to5 like tool with dvd::rip nice interface and the
unprecedent kind of support this mailing list and mainly you provide :-)
I would like to thank too. I'm using dvdrip but would like to ask for
alternatives/possibilities if one would like to backup a 9-DVD on a 5-DVD.
