Could you try 0.52 on your current system to verify that a change in 
dvd::rip 0.98 is responsible for this behaviour? No need to do a system
wide "make install", just download 0.52.7 from here

  http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/dist/Video-DVDRip-0.52.7.tar.gz

extract it in a temporary location and issue:

  perl Makefile.PL
  # if it complains about a missing Gtk::Gdk::Pixbuf
  # install libgdk-pixbuf-perl
  make
  # NO "make install"
  export PATH=$PWD:$PATH
  dvdrip

This way it don't conflict with the installed 0.98 version.

If everything works well with 0.52, I will install Ubunty Edgy somewhere
to be able to reproduce this.
