Hi Anton,
Don't think there is a problem with the drive as I can rip and encode with the same drive under windows using dvdshrink. I am using PClinuxOS07 if that helps?

Maybe a dvd drive problem? Try dd'ing to your hd and then mount the
iso and rip from there. If dd'ing is taking a long time then your drive is having a hard time reading the dvd. HTH Anton
