If you rip your dvd to disk (or at least the track you are interested
in), then you need the dvd for about 15 minutes. Once it is ripped,
and you have saved your project, you simply reopen your project (rip)
file, and transcode away. If you did NOT do this, then remember that
you should always do this (!), and have a look at either transcode or
mencoder (dvd::rip creates a project file with lots of info, but uses
transcode for the actual dvd9->dvd? or divx/xvid/ffmpeg, etc). They
are both pretty easy to use if you are comfortable with reading large
man pages and constituting long command lines. If not, get a disk that
you don't have to return quickly, and have a play with dvd::rip. Once
you know it - you're hooked!
