No sooner did I post this then I got a DVD where the workaround didn't work.  
On 'The Holiday', ripping would hang as I described in my first post.  
Selecting following tracks like tracks 1-4 would delay the hang till the last 
track.  Transcoding the first track yielded an AVI w/ the picture hung for 
the first 30 seconds and out of sync afterwards.
