Hi there,
I'm fairly new to the linux desktop (although I've been using linux on
servers for years). I recently came across dvdrip while trying to copy a
friends DVD (legally, I should add). But I quickly came across an issue.
The DVD I was trying to transcode is 720 x 576 which would give you an
aspect ratio of 5:4 if the pixels are square. All the media players seem
to magically know, though, to display the DVD at 16:9. Maybe this is a
DVD standard or something? When transcoding it with dvdrip though, the
resultant video image (with no zooming/cliping) is always displayed at 5:4.
After some digging I discovered the option to specify an export pixel
aspect ratio to transcode via the "--export_par" option and I noticed
that adding an interface to specifying it from dvdrip is on Jörn's to-do
list. Being interested in GTK+ programming, I decided to go ahead and
implement this in dvdrip myself, just for the fun of it really. I
wondered if you might be interested in the patch? Shall I post it with
some more info?
All the best, and thanks for dvdrip - it's a fantastic bit of software!
Tim.
