no , it was not a broken image-magick installation. the convert program 
was in place, more than that there were TWO different versions of them 
in /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin but the script installed in ~/bin was 
preferred. simply renaming the script cured the  malfunction. however 
you have a point in avoiding adding absolute path searches.
