Did you transcode the ripped vob- files? Or did you simply rip the dvd?

You will need rar for subtitles in your avi- films... If you don't want to 
transcode your films with subtitles the rar- package isn't needed.
Is your mplayer-installation in your PATH? Your can open dvd::rip and have a 
"check all settings" by pressing "crtl+p". A box will open and than choose 
"chaeck all settings" to see if mplayer will be found.
