[dvd::rip] repetitive alternating chop on freebsd

Subject: [dvd::rip] repetitive alternating chop on freebsd

Greetings, list :)

I searched the mailing list archives for a solution to the issue to my problem, but the one thread that kind of came close didn't have a solution, so I am going to just ask directly.  Apologies if this has been covered before.

I'm running dvd::rip on freebsd 7.2.  It rips and transcodes the file, but the resulting avi displays jerkiness on playback.  It is best described as for every second of video playing, the first half that second plays ok, and the latter half gets noticeable choppiness.  then the cycle starts over, for every second of playback.  It's worse during scenes with lots of motion.

Because of the latter statement above, I thought that it might be a telecine issue, but inverse telecine only made the resulting file drop frames so fast that the audio was about 5 seconds out of sync after a few minutes.

My settings are as such:

codec: ffmpeg
ffmpeg codec: h264
vid framerate 29.970
no deinterlace (for the first rip anyway)
video bitrate 2500 kbps
two pass encoding enabled
reuse log NOT checked

The disk in question is an older SD DVD, released in the late 90s.  I am pretty sure the problem isn't with the disk itself, as I have the problems with other, newer source disks.  Also, when I use my older method to transcode, there are no issues with the resulting avi.  The older method is a homebrew suite of shell scripts that use mencoder to copy the vobs to a local avi file, and then two-pass ffmpeg encoding to h264 from that file.  I want to use dvd::rip for the ease of use and the spiffy gui, instead of the kludgey (but seemingly more effective) shell script method I have.

Thanks for any insight anyone may be able to provide.
