dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It provides an easy to use but feature-rich Gtk+ GUI to control almost all aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known video processing swissknife transcode and many other Open Source tools. dvd::rip itself is licensed under GPL / Perl Artistic License.

"And note: it's spelt dvd::rip, and nothing else."

The latest stable version of dvd::rip is 0.98.11

  • Marc Ole Bulling created a live CD image with dvd::rip and the transcode stuff to easyly set up a cluster node. If you are interessted, check out his project homepage. If you have any suggestions, comments or whatever leave a comment in the guestbook.

  • First release in 2009 - happy new year ;):
dvd::rip 0.98.10 [stable]. Refer to the change log for details of this release.
  • This version drops the warning about experimental transcode 1.1.x support, since dvd::rip can be considered to work with all current transcode releases at the same level of functionality. There may be still issues with transcode 1.1.x under special circumstances, since the transcode team improved and changed a lot under the hood. So don't hesitate to post bug reports to the list if you hit any bugs.

  • Hey, the project is still alive ;) Today we have a feature / bugfix release on the stable branch: dvd::rip 0.98.9 [stable]. Refer to the change log for details of this release.
  • This version has a new translation to Danish, thanks to Ysangkok for his work. As well it fixes a cluster avimerge problem with recent transcode versions and adds full support for anamporh transcoding without any scaling applied.

  • A quick feature release on the stable branch: dvd::rip 0.98.8 [stable]. Refer to the change log for details of this release.
  • Obviously many people use dvd::rip on smaller screens (widescreen notebooks and stuff ;) but the rich GUI doesn't fit very well on them. This release adds a "small screen size" option, which puts the notebook tabs to the left and adds scrollbars, so every bit of the dvd::rip GUI is reachable even on the smallest screen now ;)

  • Today we have a new release on the stable branch, fixing some smaller bugs: dvd::rip 0.98.7 [stable], updates some translations and adds a Catalan translation. Refer to the change log for details.

  • Here we have a quick bugfix of the Friday 13th release... ;) dvd::rip crashed on initial startup when no configuration was found. dvd::rip 0.98.6 [stable] fixes that. As well the Swedish and Serbian translations got some updates. Refer to the change log for details.

  • Here we have a new release: dvd::rip 0.98.4 [stable]. It fixes some smaller bugs, including the sporadic preview hanging bug. Please refer to the change log for details.
  • It's the first release with support for transcode's 1.1.x branch (CVS HEAD), which will become stable in foreseeable time. Support is experimental, but basic operation seems to work quite well. Please report bugs if you find them.

  • Today was bug squashing day, so I'm pleased to announce this new release: dvd::rip 0.98.3 [stable]. Besides a bunch of smaller bug fixes it's the first with a Swedish user interface, thanks to Daniel Nylander. Refer to the change log for all the gory details.

  • Here we have a new release: dvd::rip 0.98.2 [stable]. It mainly updates the Serbian translation, which is now available in a latin variant as well. Thanks to Filip Miletic for this work. Refer to the change log for details.
  • From time to time people ask me how they could support the dvd::rip project, e.g. by donating some money to the author. I just created a PayPal account for that purpose, so if you like to support me this way, you're welcome ;)

  • Today we have a maintenance release on the stable branch: dvd::rip 0.98.1 [stable]. It fixes some smaller bugs and has an updated Spanish translation. Refer to the change log for details.

  • It took more than a year of hard work, but finally we have a new dvd::rip stable release again: dvd::rip 0.98.0 [stable]. Thanks to all the people who helped with this release by testing, sending bug reports, making suggestions or translations of the user interface.
  • Just a few highlights what changed since the latest stable release:
    • A new shiny GUI with many improvements using Gtk2
    • Installation & initial setup improved
    • HAL support for DVD device selection
    • Extended progress window with all details of job execution
    • Pause & resume a running transcode job
    • Subtitle preview grabbing during ripping
    • AC3 passthrough for on-the-fly processing and DVD images
    • Cluster mode improvements, e.g. consideration of node speed
    • Clip & Zoom windows improved, with details about clipping constraints
    • Support for h264 video codec
